"A woman who loses her husband is called a widow.
A man who loses his wife is called a widower.
A child who loses its parents is called an orphan.
There is no word to describe a parent who loses a child,
for there is no word to describe the pain."

Tragically, every day in the UK, 17 babies are stillborn or die shortly after birth. The death of a much loved and much wanted baby is devastating for the parents, their families and friends.
North Herts. SANDS are a local group of volunteers, all of whom have experienced the loss of a baby. We were established over 10 years ago as a local branch of National SANDS, founded in 1981.
All of the services provided are free of charge, working to support parents and families who have lost a baby during pregnancy, birth or after birth. We are also working towards improvements in care during pregnancy and when a baby dies. Those who attend the group are either bereaved parents or healthcare professionals. We offer monthly support meetings, telephone and one-to-one befriending, information and resources.
